Set in the small village of Anatevka, on the eve of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the musical centres on Tevye and his five headstrong daughters who wish to marry for love, rejecting the marriages arranged by the village Matchmaker as well as their deep-rooted family traditions. Brimming with themes still relevant to today - love, humanity, political and social upheaval, rebellion and displacement - Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most powerful and life-affirming musicals ever written. Running 15-17 February, the show is suitable for audiences of all ages who will enjoy favourite musical numbers including 'If I Were a Rich Man', 'Matchmaker' and the uplifting opening number 'Tradition'. ENCORE’s artistic director Noël Jones said: “I think the key thing about undertaking Fiddler for us, is to make sure that we do Sholom Aleichem’s spell-binding stories justice. The musical is so full of laughter and tenderness with truly pertinent themes, that we’ve really focused on bringing the characters, their humour, and the beauty of the ritual celebrations to joyous life. “People so often say about ENCORE productions that they cannot believe the professional attitude and standard of what they see. I think it’s very easy for people to undervalue what young people can achieve. The thing I love about our company is they always put their heart and soul in to whatever production we undertake. They’re all extremely talented individuals, all from schools and colleges around Winchester, and it’s a privilege to work with them.” Fiddler on the Roof runs at Theatre Royal Winchester Thursday 15 to Saturday 17 February 7.30pm; Thursday and Saturday matinee 2.30pm. Tickets: £19; concessions £14; family £52 (2 adults/2 concessions); special offers: Thurs matinee tickets: £16.50; concessions £11.50. Buy nine tickets and get the tenth free.
