Description

All of Jane Austen's novels focus on family and friendship, but it is widely suggested that the family of Catherine Morland, the heroine of Northanger Abbey, most strongly reflects life in the Austen family. Like Jane, Catherine's father was a clergyman and they both grew up in a vicarage with a large and lively family. Displays throughout the Museum, featuring newly acquired treasures, will explore the themes of family and friendship in both Northanger Abbey and in the lives of the Austen family. Come and discover how attending society balls, writing letters and reading novels played a role in the lives of these real and imagined characters.
