Personal Bests to be celebrated at Paralympic Event

Children and adults with additional needs are invited to go for gold by taking part in a range of sports at this month’s Paralympic Personal Bests event.

The event, now in its fifth year, has been organised by Winchester City Council in partnership with Winchester Go LD (Learning Disabilities) and Places for People Leisure.

The aim is to give participants an experience that they will never forget by offering them the opportunity to take part in a variety of challenges in the following sports: swimming, golf, low level circuits, new age kurling, archery, football, cricket, trampolining and badminton.

The competition, which will take place on Wednesday 24 August at River Park Leisure Centre (SO23 7DD), is open to children aged five and over. The day will run from 11am-3.30pm with adult swimming also on offer from 9.30am on a first come, first served basis.

The cost for this event is £5 for the whole day with an additional £1 charge applying for siblings. To avoid any disappointment, advance booking is recommended.

Paralympic Personal Bests is also supported by the Sport & Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA), a group of local partners driving sport opportunities forward. Part of its current plans focus specifically on disability sport.

Cllr Frank Pearson, Winchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Health & Wellbeing, said:

Disability sport plays a huge part in the SPAA action plan and it is opportunities like these which really help increase participation and raise awareness of what is on offer. I would encourage anyone who enjoys disability sport to come along.

Whether you have played sport or not, this event will allow you to join in, improve your skills and, most importantly, have some fun.
