Walking football match first for Winchester
On Tuesday 13 December, the first ever competitive walking football match took place in Winchester. Despite the grey weather, the newly-formed King Alfred’s Foot Soldiers played a strong game against a formidable Southampton Strollers side, although beginners luck was not on their side as they lost 7 goals to Southampton’s 10.
The high scoring game saw great sportsmanship from both sides and was well-supported by football enthusiasts, many of whom have resumed their love of playing the game by getting involved in walking football.
Students from the University of Winchester filmed the game, the highlights of which can be found on the Active Winchester Facebook page.
Afterwards the players and spectators were able to relax and enjoy a mince pie and hot drink courtesy of River Park Leisure Centre. This provided players from both sides with an opportunity to socialise and share their football experiences.
The winners were presented with a trophy and team photos were taken to mark the occasion. Another match is planned soon.
Councillor Frank Pearson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Health and Wellbeing said:
I am pleased to see the development of this sport, as it helps older soccer players to maintain their interest in the game. This is a growth activity offering players the opportunity to continue with their enthusiasm and keep fit at the same time.
There is a walking football session at 10am every Tuesday at River Park Leisure Centre. If you are interested in taking part, please contact Tom Crowe at tcrowe@winchester.go.uk or 01962 848 496.
