New walking leaflet ‘Casual Games for City Walkers’

A new game has been commissioned by the City Council, in conjunction with the Hat Fair and Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinAcc), to encourage people to explore the city on foot. The Casual Games for City Walkers leaflet was created to inspire long-standing residents and visitors to discover places they never knew existed and to find alternative ways to walk around Winchester.

Harry Giles, a Scottish poet and performer, who produced the leaflet said:

Casual Games is a series of publications to bring play into places it doesn’t usually appear, designing games that happen in public, happen in a conversation between friends, or only happen in your imagination.

Casual Games for City Walkers is part of Feet First, Winchester City Council’s Corporate Campaign for 2016/17 which aims to promote walking as the norm for short journeys – or as part of a longer journey – to school, shops, work and public transport links as well as for leisure purposes.

Simon Finch, Assistant Director at Winchester City Council added:

The leaflet has been a great success and over 500 were given away during the Hat Fair weekend. The aim of the game is to give people fun things to do whilst walking round Winchester and to discover new places and routes or look at places they already know in a different way. We hope it will encourage people to be more active whilst underlining the fact that Winchester is a very walkable city.
