Adjutant General’s Corps present ‘Freedom of Entry’ artwork to the City of Winchester
A specially commissioned commemorative print has been presented to the City of Winchester by the Adjutant General’s Corps to mark their ‘Freedom of Entry’ to the City. The print is taken from an original painting depicting the Adjutant General’s Corps exercising their rights of the Freedom of Entry by parading through the streets in October 2015.
The Freedom of Entry is an ancient privilege allowing a Regiment to parade through Winchester with ‘bayonets fixed, drums beating and colours flying’. It comes from a period in history when only trusted units would be allowed to carry arms within City boundaries.
Colonel Adjutant General’s Corps, Colonel Frances Castle ADC, made the presentation, which was accepted on behalf of the city by The Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Jane Rutter. The print was unveiled and placed on display at the full Council meeting on 2 November 2016.
Councillor Rutter said:
I was delighted to accept this artwork on behalf of the City of Winchester. The print captures the marvellous spectacle of the parade last year and cements the long-standing, close relationship between the Adjutant General’s Corps and ourselves. Our thanks go to them, for their service, their loyalty and for this lovely commemorative gift.
The print will be placed on permanent display in due course.
