New transport group for Winchester district

A new group to consider transport issues across the district is being set up by Winchester City Council.

The Winchester District Transport Board will be led by key members and officers and will focus on how to deliver the aims and objectives set out in the Council’s Community Strategy.

It will also consider transport-related issues in Portfolio Holder Plans, strategies and policies and the delivery of major projects as well as enabling stakeholders to raise issues of concern.

The City Council hopes that public transport providers, transport policy-makers and other interest groups will form part of this new Board. In addition there will be opportunities for public input and engagement as work develops.

Cllr James Byrnes, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transport and Professional Services, said:

We have considered carefully how the Council can best address transport issues not just in the city but across the whole district.

We believe the new Winchester District Transport Board will provide that focus and is particularly relevant now as the County and City Councils are about to start a study looking at traffic movement in and around Winchester.

Cllr Frank Pearson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Health and Wellbeing, said:

Transport is very important to the Council and it has direct links to other issues we want to address such as air quality, encouraging walking and cycling and improving the public realm.

I look forward to working with partners to consider and address transport-related issues across the district.

The Winchester District Transport Board will be established this autumn and replaces the City Council’s support for the Winchester District Strategic Partnership Transport Group which was a sub-group of the former Strategic Partnership. It will also take on the work previously covered by separate walking and cycling groups.
