Winchester invites public art proposals

Artists, designers and creative professionals are being invited to make a new piece of public art for the heart of Winchester.

Expressions of interest in creating and installing a work of public art next to the Casson Block on St George’s Street are being sought by Winchester City Council.

The specification, with a contract value of £10,000, is available online via the City Council website and applications may be made until 2 October 2016.

The work will be located in the area between the Casson Block on St George’s Street and the rear of the Hampshire Chronicle building in Upper Brook Street.

The area is currently undergoing a transformation. This involves creating an increased area for public use in front of the building, new paving, better lighting and a greener environment.

The public art should complement that work, and help to make St George’s Street an attractive place for visitors.

Cllr Steve Miller, Portfolio Holder for Economy and Arts, is excited to see what ideas may come forward. He said:

The Casson Block Enhancement Scheme is under way and will create an excellent site for an exciting piece of art to complement our existing range of public art. We are proud of the Kite Flyer, Luminous Motion and the painted bollards which are amongst a whole host of pieces in the city which inspire, entertain and engage.

The specification and details of how to express an interest are available at
http://www.winchester.gov.uk/business/casson-block until 2 October.
