Spring clean for Winchester

People are being urged to grab a rubbish sack and give the Winchester district a good spring clean in early March.

The National Great British Spring Clean event comes to Winchester between Friday 3 and Sunday 5 March 2017.

The campaign has a simple aim: to bring together people from across the district to clear up the litter that can blight towns, villages and countryside.

Cllr Jan Warwick, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said:

The City Council is working in partnership with its street-cleansing contractor Id Verde to support this event. Litter-pickers and bags will be supplied and arrangements made for the collection of sacks following the litter pick.

Community involvement in resolving the litter problem is vital to the work that the City Council has been doing to address the issue in recent years. We have a dedicated Litter Hit Squad to provide a rapid response to problems in both urban and rural areas. New street-cleaning machines in city and town centres provide higher levels of cleansing in tricky locations. We made funds available to pay for washing of Winchester High Street and adjacent roads this Spring and each year thereafter.

This work builds on our improved annual leaf-removal programme which is available to residents via our website so that everyone can see when their own road is due to be cleared. We are looking at ways in which a similar approach can be adopted for routine street-sweeping and grounds maintenance activities.

Cllr Warwick added:

At the end of last year a detailed resident satisfaction survey was carried out and I am pleased to report that satisfaction levels with environmental services were high. An independent review of overall contract performance was also carried out which confirmed good performance by both Biffa and ID Verde (who recently bought the Landscape Group business).

I recognise that delivery of these services is extremely important and impacts on every household in the district. I will therefore continue to seek further progress and ensure that we maintain the quality of district that will all desire.
