Green light for 76 new Council homes in Stanmore

At Winchester City Council’s Planning Committee this Thursday, plans to build 76 new homes in Stanmore were approved – with work set to commence in the next 12 months.

The plans for the Valley, Stanmore, have been adopted following an extensive consultation process with local residents that influenced the design of the homes and enabled local people to express the importance of retaining open space surrounding them. As a result the appearance of the buildings has been designed to complement the overall look of the area, whilst maintaining a large open space for the community.

Cllr Jamie Scott, Cllr for St Luke Ward, spoke in favour of the scheme at the meeting and commented following the decision:

“When I became a Councillor in 2011 one of the biggest issues for my residents was the lack of local housing. This is the second scheme I will see commence in Stanmore and it’s really welcome. We are pleased to see the Council redressing the balance here following a general loss of family Housing to HMOs. It’s a good example of the Council and local Members actually listening to what people who live here have been saying and addressing their concerns. Basically this is the Stanmore Planning Framework in action, influencing and shaping the future.”

Monica Gill, Chair of Tenants and Council Together association added,

“We were pleased to be able to have our say on this as its obviously on our doorstep. We definitely do need housing, and the most important thing is that we still have that green open space area for our children to play on.”

Cllr Caroline Horrill, Leader of Winchester City Council and Portfolio Holder for Housing added.

“This is an important step forward in meeting our aspirations to build 300 council homes in the next 3 years across the district.  We are already building 100 homes, and want to offer local people better options and shorten the Council House waiting list. The community of Stanmore has been very active in developing the plans and we are really pleased to see that the scheme has got the green light from all members of the Planning Committee today.”
