On Wednesday 13 September, seven pupils representing The Westgate School in Winchester met Council Leader Councillor Caroline Horrill and Councillor Dominic Hiscock, Councillor for St Bartholomew Ward at the Council’s new housing development, currently under construction at Victoria Road, Winchester. The students visited the site to inspect their artwork, currently displayed on the external hoarding of the site.

The Year 10 Art students, who attended the HH Drew site earlier this year, to learn about the construction industry, were tasked to produce artwork for the hoardings under the theme: “Jobs in Construction”.  The images they produced were put together to form two brightly coloured montages - one focussing on the tools and trades involved in the building industry and the other depicting the outcome of the building work – the homes created.  By way of thanks, each student received a voucher for art equipment, courtesy of the Council’s Economy and Arts team.

Councillor Caroline Horrill said:

What the students have created, perfectly sums up the image we were trying to convey; from construction phase to new houses, and ultimately new homes for the people of Winchester. We are grateful to them for the time, care and commitment they have shown to this project.  We are delighted with the results of their hard work and hope that they enjoyed the process too

Katie Cull of HH Drew, added

We are committed to engaging with the local community and were keen to invite the students to our site to help them understand the various roles involved in the construction industry.  We were all very impressed with the results of the ‘Jobs in Construction’ challenge

Mrs Katie Moore, Head of Arts at The Westgate School summed up the pupil’s views:

The students enjoyed visiting the site and took the project to heart.  We are proud of the artwork they produced, which is a fantastic showcase of the pupil’s talent. It was great for all of us to see them displayed on the front of the emerging building

On completion of the building work, the student’s artwork will be displayed inside the completed housing development, for all the residents to enjoy.
