Sport & Leisure Centre plans prove popular

An exhibition showcasing Winchester Sport & Leisure Centre planning application held in the Guildhall between 25-29 June was attended by over 100 residents.

Despite the World Cup and good weather, a broad range of local people attended, including residents, representatives from sports groups, interest groups and local school children.

The feedback and exit poll was overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic comments were logged which reflected a warm reception to the designs and a public desire to press on with the development.

Winchester Goalball Club – a sports club for those who are visually impaired shared their knowledge and experiences to help develop the plans. The Goalball Club representatives formed part of the City Council’s Inclusivity Advisory Group – established to ensure the centre is a place everyone can enjoy.

A group of children, teachers and governors from All Saints School were also welcomed at the exhibition. Cllr Lisa Griffiths answered their probing questions and pupils were challenged to find out interesting facts about the Centre by playing a special treasure hunt quiz.

Cllr Lisa Griffiths, Portfolio holder for Health and Wellbeing said:

“We held the exhibition so that residents would have the opportunity to come and  look at the plans and materials close up and to ask their questions in person. This administration is keen to listen to what local people have to say so that all future developments have the best impacts for the broadest range of customers.

“I was delighted that so many people were as excited and pleased with what they saw as we are. And I was particularly impressed with the well-thought out questions from the children from All Saints School who visited the exhibition. They represent the generation who will using this facility in the longer term and I think it was really important that they had the chance to have their say.”

The exhibition consisted of 20 exhibition boards, copies of the key planning documents, a new broadsheet which could be taken away and examples of building materials. These are also available to view online on Winchester City Council’s project web page.
