Bat & Bird Guidance

We are unfortunately facing an unprecedented decline in our native wildlife. In order to help protect, enhance and restore biodiversity the council has produced a new Biodiversity Action Plan. This focuses on 22 key species and includes both bats and birds. These species groups have learnt to live alongside humans but in some way rely on buildings for shelter and as a place to breed and nest.

As part of the BAP we have produced the following guidance to help both members of the public and people whose work involves buildings learn more about these animals and how they are protected.

Bird Guidance

Many birds have declined across the UK this includes species such as Swifts and House Sparrows which nest within buildings. In the UK and Hampshire, swifts have declined by over 50% during the last 23 years. One of the reasons this species has declined is due to a loss of nesting sites associated with building improvements, renovation and development.

Some species such as swifts migrate huge distances from Africa to the UK to breed. They are very loyal to their breeding sites and return year after year.

Winchester City Council are working with Hampshire Swifts https://www.hampshireswifts.co.uk to provide alternative nest sites for swifts by suppling council properties, particularly those undergoing roofing or repair works, with swift boxes.
