Emergencies and Emergency Planning
Major incidents can take many forms such as severe weather, flooding, terrorism, water disruption, power failure and transport crashes.
Our role in these emergencies is to support the blue light services (police, fire and rescue, and ambulance) and help life to return to normal as quickly as possible. This may be through:
- Providing temporary accommodation if people need to be evacuated from their homes
- Issuing important information to the public and the media
- Supporting our vulnerable residents and communities to look after themselves
- Cleaning up after an incident and making sure it is safe for the public
- Providing expertise on subjects like environmental health and building control
- Keeping our services running whilst deploying staff and other resources to the incident (business continuity)
We have an Emergency Response Plan and an Emergency Control Centre that can be activated at any time to coordinate our response to an emergency. We also work closely with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Resilience Forum and Hampshire County Council’s Emergency Planning & Resilience Team to develop and exercise our responses to high risk incidents such as a pandemic.
