Asbestos removal
Must be carried out by licensed contractors who must notify the enforcing authority of their intention to remove asbestos.
Asbestos can be found in any building built before the year 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc) and causes around 5000 deaths every year.
Asbestos at home
If you have small quantities of cement bonded asbestos sheets to dispose of, (no more than 15 sheets of approx size 120cm x 60cm), it can be taken to one of five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in Hampshire that are specially licensed to receive this type of hazardous waste. No other type of asbestos is acceptable.
For health and safety reasons, all whole sheets should be wrapped securely in plastic sheeting and should be transported whole. Small or broken pieces should be double bagged and securely sealed when brought to the site. Avoid breaking the material where possible. For guidance on safe handling, contact the Health and Safety Executive on 0300 003 1747, or see: www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos.
Please note that you must phone in advance to pre-book acceptance and to check that the container is not full and awaiting emptying, or you may not be able to deposit your cement bonded asbestos.
For information about how and where to dispose of asbestos visit Hampshire County Council waste and recycling pages
Asbestos in the workplace
The duty to manage asbestos is directed at those who manage non-domestic premises: the people with responsibility for protecting others who work in such premises, or use them in other ways, from the risks to ill health that exposure to asbestos causes. For more information visit HSE asbestos pages
Health and Safety Officers may ask questions when they are inspecting your premises regarding this issue. It will depend how far you have progressed with your controls as to what action they may take.
