A Heritage Champion is a highly influential and important role, but it is at the discretion of the individual to interpret the role in the best way to suit to their interests, position and the local environment.

At a strategic level, the Heritage Champion’s role is to ensure that the local plans and development strategies capture the contribution and significant locally distinctive character of the local historic environment.

More specifically, the role of Heritage Champion includes:

• Assisting local authorities with managing the historic environment in their area
• Promote heritage and generate enthusiasm and awareness
• Ensure that commitments to the proper care of the historic environment is embedded in all relevant activities and plans of the local authority
• Support authority’s local historic environment services
