Changes to household bin collections

Changes to household bin collections

We’re lowering our carbon emissions and getting ready to recycle more.

Biff recycling lorry

After working closely with our waste collection partner, Biffa, to plan the future of our waste and recycling collections service, we’re making some improvements. The changes will happen from 7 October 2024.

Starting 7 October

Route changes that may affect you

We’re changing some of our collection routes to increase recycling and reduce carbon emissions. These changes may affect your bin collection schedule. You’ll get a new bin collection calendar and a letter before the end of September telling you if and how the changes affect you.

You can also see details of your new collection schedule online at Find out your waste collection day.

It is still possible to check when your next bin collection will be, up until 27 September 2024, at When are my bins collected? 2023/24.

Please note: You’ll see there is a one-week gap between your old calendar ending and the new one starting. It's business as usual until 7 October, so just keep putting your bins out on your usual collection day until the new calendar starts.

We hope that the transition to your new bin collection calendar is a smooth one. Please remember to have your bin ready for collection from 6.30am on the day of collection.

Reducing carbon emissions

The route changes will reduce the amount of miles our bin crews cover and therefore reduce carbon emissions.

We’re also rolling out our first 100% electric waste and recycling vehicle! The electric vehicle will be in operation alongside the rest of our fleet, which has already reduced carbon emissions by over 90% by running on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) instead of diesel.

NEW: Bin day reminders by email

We are offering a new service for all your bin collections, to help you remember when to put your bins out. You will get a reminder by email the evening before your bin collection is due.

If you already have a recently active Your Winchester account, you don't need to sign up - you will automatically receive the reminders the evening before your collections are due and can unsubscribe at any time. If you do not have an active Your Winchester account (or you are not sure) you can sign up to receive the reminders at Bin Day Reminders.
