Taking the Central Winchester Regeneration project to the next stage
Progress with the regeneration of central Winchester has been made following a meeting of the committee responsible for the project.
Members of the Cabinet (Central Winchester Regeneration) Committee met yesterday (Tuesday 27 November) and approved:
- the selection of an architect to refurbish Coitbury House (see separate press release)
- a feasibility study for a pop-up site next to the bus station
- the creation of a design brief for improvements to the lower High Street and Broadway public realm, which can be delivered in stages.
Cllr Caroline Horrill, Leader of the Council and Chair of the Committee said:
“We are happy to receive the recommendations from the advisory panels which are helping us to make progress with this important project. There is much to do and work continues apace to ensure the City is a thriving centre for residents, visitors and businesses.”
One of the directors of The Nutshell, a new arts venue for theatre, music, arts and exhibitions gave an update on how they are settling into their new premises. The Nutshell recently moved into the former Antique Market, thanks to the council’s work to make empty property available for short-term ‘meanwhile’ uses.
The Committee Members also received updates from the three advisory panels that were set up to focus on Coitbury House, meanwhile uses and Lower High Street and Broadway public realm.
A brief for a strategic development advisor was also commented on ahead of its presentation for approval by Cabinet on 12 December.
