Winchester City Council announces new Mayor
Councillor Derek Green has officially become the 823rd Mayor of Winchester, having been appointed at Guildhall Winchester in a Mayor Making ceremony.
Cllr Green succeeds Cllr Vivian Achwal, and will work alongside the new Deputy Mayor of Winchester, Councillor Angela Clear, ward member for Southwick and Wickham. Cllr Clear was previously Mayor of Winchester in 2015-2016.
As the new Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Green will be supported by his wife, who becomes the Mayoress, Mrs Sheila Green. He will support three charities as part of his efforts to promote the work of The Mayor of Winchester’s Charities, Trinity Winchester, The British Heart Foundation and Winchester Hospice.
Cllr Green, who serves St Luke’s ward, said:
“Being elected as Mayor of Winchester is a great honour, and I am looking forward to embracing the year ahead, supporting local businesses, events, as well as pushing forward with my charity initiatives.”
The Mayoralty of Winchester dates back to 1200, making it the second oldest in England. The event was the 823rd Mayor Making and Annual General Meeting of Winchester City Council, and its guest list included military dignitaries from Worthy Down and Sir John Moore Barracks, the High Steward of Winchester, Lady Mary Fagan LG DCVO and the Honorary Recorder of Winchester, Her Honour Judge Angela Morris. Guests in attendance were entertained by the Waynflete Singers.
