Christmas celebration marks first event for new Ukrainian community group
A new community group for Ukrainians in the Winchester district hosted its first event on Saturday 16 December to celebrate the festive season with Ukrainian Christmas traditions.
Founded in September this year, The Winchester Ukrainian Cultural Association is a non-profit community group formed with support from Winchester City Council and Community First.
The association aims to provide support and give a voice to Ukrainians living in the district and will host regular events in conjunction with the Ukrainian community.
Speaking about the creation of the Winchester Ukrainian Cultural Association, its Chair Yulia Dubovyk, said:
“We are happy that Ukrainian community in Winchester has now got a formal voice and we’re able to support Ukrainians in the district and contribute to local community. We are grateful to Winchester City Council and Community First for the ongoing support and excited about our future projects.”
Winchester City Council Cabinet Member for Community and Engagement Cllr Kathleen Becker said:
“I’m so pleased that we’ve been able to support the creation of the Winchester Ukrainian Cultural Association in partnership with Community First.
“Winchester’s Ukrainian community is a vibrant and valued part of our district and I wish the association every success - and its members a very Merry Christmas!.”
The event on 16 December celebrated Ukrainian culture with activities including a Ukrainian-English concert, a Vertep or Ukrainian nativity performance, a photo zone with Ukrainian attire, authentic Ukrainian cuisine, and a variety of workshops.
