New high street bunting celebrates Winchester festivals
Winchester City Council has added new bunting to the city’s high street, marking the start of festival season.
The colourful bunting incorporates the colour palette of the St Maurice’s Covert mural which was completed last year. It replaces the Union Jack bunting which was also organised by Winchester City Council to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.
This week sees the return of the homegrown street performance and outdoor arts event Hat Fair (30 June – 1 July), which was founded in 1974 by Jonathan Kay and is the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts.
The new Winchester Food Festival takes place on 9 July whilst the Wickham Festival returns from 3-6 August. Later in the year, there’s lots to look forward to including October’s Winchester Poetry Festival.
Cllr Lucille Thompson, Winchester City Council Cabinet Member for Business and Culture, said: “Our residents can be rightly proud of the vibrant celebrations of culture that take place across Winchester - the festivals we attract to our historic city and district offer something for everyone, whether it's food, music, theatre, heritage, art or literature.
“As well as entertaining those who live in Winchester, the festivals play a key role in attracting visitors from all over the country and beyond, which widens our well-earned reputation as a cultural destination and provides a welcome boost for our local economy.”
