City Council Ukraine team shortlisted for national award
Winchester City Council’s Ukraine team has been shortlisted for an award at the Local Government Chronicle Awards on Wednesday 12 June.
The team, who work within the council’s Housing and Communities services, are up for an award in the small team category.
The category celebrates teams of 10 people or less, with a particular focus on innovation, resilience, inclusivity and results.
The council’s Ukraine team was formed to help Ukrainians settling in the district following their escape from war.
Their work has supported more than 280 Ukrainian families with settling down to life in the district by organising language and skills workshops, providing assistance with accommodation, promoting to access local services and more.
The team has also organised and supported a number of cultural events to help Ukrainians feel more welcome and at home in the district.
Speaking about the award, Cabinet member for Community and Engagement Cllr Kathleen Becker said:
“Our Ukraine team work tirelessly to make sure that Ukrainians who have been uprooted by war are able to integrate successfully in our district, and the effort they make to ensure Ukrainians feel welcome and at home is exceptional. They also provide support to our hosts, who are invaluable in this process.
“I’m so proud of the work the team does – their efforts are thoroughly worthy of recognition and so I’m really pleased that they have been shortlisted for this award.”
